Question:
My wife had a hysterectomy 8 years ago and is on long term HRT. She suffers
with mysterious swelling of her legs, feet and fingers and suffers with lack
of sleep and is intolerant of many types of food and has violent mood
swings. She's been seen by many doctors here in the UK, all of whom appear
totally puzzled by her symptoms.
Afriend mentioned the possibility of fibromyalgia being a possible cause.
Can any UK posters help me out with where to go for investigation of this?
We live in East Yorkshire.
Answer:
I haven't had a hysterectomy but was on HRT for a while and in spite of
all the things I was told it would do for me, I had all kinds of problems
with it, some of which were the swelling of my feet, hands, and legs. This
was water retention. I also had high blood pressure. When I was given
medication for the hbp which included a diuretic, this helped the swelling
and when I was taken off HRT, that seemed to help with my mood swings. In
my opinion, because of my bad experience with it, I don't think HRT is for
everyone.
I was in South Yorkshire until September when we moved to Berkshire. It was
in S.Y. that a doctor suggested going off the HRT but here in Berks that I
was informally diagnosed with fibromyalgia. It is my understanding that you
can ask your doctor for a referral to a specialist if he can't help. Mine
suggested referring me to a rheumatologist but if he hadn't I would have
asked. If you think her problems could be related to hormones, maybe she
could ask for a referral to someone who specializes in that sort of thing?
I hope she finds someone who can help her. I know what she's going through!
God bless you and take care.
